When planning your campervan trip around Scotland, we have some great ideas so you can enjoy your holiday.
The North Coast 500
“Scotland's answer to Route 66.” That is what the Scottish tourist are calling it to tempt you to see the beauty of the Highlands: North Coast 500.
The circular route, launched last year, skirts the very top of the United Kingdom and offers visitors “fairytale castles, beaches and ruins”. In other words, a slice of Scotland's soul a must do for those who love a great tour and will have you coming back and back again.
Playing on the Water
The number of water sports activities available in Scotland is huge, which is hardly surprising when you consider that it has hundreds of miles of coastline, numerous lochs and hundreds of rivers. The sheer variety of what's on offer will satisfy anyone's sporting preferences - guaranteed!
Scotland has lots of great sailing venues, both on the open seas around the coast and on more sheltered waters on many of its lochs, so yachtsmen of all standards can indulge their passion. Good sailing can found throughout Scotland, including Argyll's fantastic coastline dotted with islands and its many lochs, the Firth of Clyde which has ten large marinas, Isle of Skye and Scotland's stunning western coastline and also the east of Scotland with an increasing number of marinas. Then of course there are all the inland and sea lochs too many to mention.
As wind is in no short supply in Scotland sports like windsurfing also thrive here. Some of the best areas are the Scottish west coast, Isle of Islay, Kintyre Peninsula and the beaches in Aberdeenshire and Fife in the east.
If surfing is more your thing you can enjoy some first class sport in Scotland. Try the north coast near Thurso which is a renowned surfing area within the UK, with its Atlantic rollers, or maybe head for East Lothian near Edinburgh or Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders. The Kintyre peninsula also has good surfing.
Whitewater rafting is a great group activity and great fun and you can choose the difficulty of the waters to suit. This sport can be enjoyed all year round, however during the summer months the river rapids are not in full spate so Whitewater rafting maybe a little gentler in these months, and please always make sure you get expert guidance!
Go mad - then try Canyoning. A whitewater ride down waterfalls and gorges, without a boat! Jump, slide and slither into deep pools. You need to have expert tuition and all the right equipment (will be supplied).
With miles of rivers and hundreds of lochs Scotland is perfect for a spot of canoeing.
Enjoy a gentle paddle across a loch with the family or canoe down a fast flowing river.
Or maybe try Sea Kayaking which is also popular and Scotland is one of the world's top destinations for this sport with its sheltered coves and bays; the waters around the Isle of Skye and Oban are perfect for this and it's a great way to explore the coastline from the water.
